How do I improve my relationship?
You cannot schedule another person’s feelings, but you can schedule your own actions. Plan the time, the conversations, and the habits that are yours to change, and the relationship gets your attention on purpose rather than whenever there is time left over.
Work backward in five steps
Describe what you want
Write down what you would like this relationship to feel like in a year, or the kind of person you hope to meet. Specific beats perfect.
Choose a time frame
Pick a date to look back and reflect. Three months is long enough to notice change and short enough to stay real.
Change one habit
Choose something within your control, like putting your phone away at dinner or listening without interrupting.
Make regular time
Put time together on the calendar, or a regular way to meet new people, such as a class or a club.
Take the next honest step
Have the conversation you have been postponing, or say yes to the invitation you would usually skip.
Where people get stuck
A plan can only cover your own actions, not someone else’s. If you ever feel unsafe in a relationship, please reach out to a local support service.
